The ‘Young Tables’ project supports young people with a migration background between the ages of 16 and 25.
Young Tables creates a safe space where young people with a migrant background can talk openly and in a oderated setting about issues that matter to them – in familiar language and among peers. It’s about exchanging ideas on an equal footing, listening, learning and strengthening self-confidence and a sense of belonging.
Young people meet in small groups for moderated discussion rounds. Innovative approaches such as cooking together or creative activities facilitate access and create a relaxed atmosphere in which to talk about mental health, stress, identity, relationships, social media or training opportunities.
The focus is not on therapy, but on guidance, knowledge and self-efficacy. The discussions take place in the language in which the participants feel most comfortable – for example, Arabic, Tigrinya, Farsi or Ukrainian.
This lowers barriers and promotes trust. A key feature of the Young Tables is the peer-to-peer methodology; due to their shared life experiences, peers make it easier to establish contact and participate in the discussion rounds. They tailor the messages to the needs of the group and promote exchange ‘at eye level’. Peers in the role of moderators do not act as experts, but as facilitators for the exchange of information, ensuring a respectful atmosphere.
